A mobile app development company in Pudukkottai is not building for one industry. The district was formed in 1974 from parts of Trichy and Thanjavur, and its work is spread across steel yards on the Trichy road, coir sheds near Aranthangi, cashew roasters at Gandarvakottai and fishing villages along the Palk Bay.
The state's District Export Action Plan lists 9,344 MSMEs in Pudukkottai. Agro based and food processing is the biggest group with 1,039 units, followed by readymade garments with 451 and general engineering and fabrication with 421. Most of these are small, owner-run businesses where the order book, the wage register and the stock count still live in notebooks and on the owner's phone.
The central government's industrial profile names the clusters. Structural and steel fabrication is concentrated in Pudukkottai town and the SIDCO estate at Mathur, with the BHEL plant at Olaikudipatti nearby. Coir fibre, rope and pith blocks come from Aranthangi, Avathankottai and Keeramangalam. Gem cutting is a skilled trade in Annavasal, Illupur, Viralimalai and Thiruvappur. Rice mills run in Alangudi and Aranthangi, brass utensils and sculpture come from Ponnamaravathy, and terracotta from Malaiyur.
The coast is the other half of the economy. Pudukkottai has 42.8 km of shoreline and, by FAO's count, 32 fishing villages, with Kottaipattinam and Jagathapattinam as the main trawl landing centres and fish products listed for export from Manamelkudi. Neighbouring districts have their own pages: Thanjavur, Ramanathapuram and Trichy.
